Hair unhealthy? Look in your Kitchen!
Eating well is for our ‘body’s sake’ yes, but it’s also for our state of mind, daily life functioning and the hairs on our head. Yes our hair...
The body can become more stressed; one may feel tired and low energy, moody and the bodily functions might be at an all time low if you don't eat well but while all of this is happening, the hair is also feeling the brunt of poor nourishment and bit by bit it begins to age faster by falling out in the shower by the handful or changing color and quality much earlier in life.
Gray hairs are a result of the hair producing less melanin and as we get older, our hair becomes drier, loses some of its elasticity and as a result the texture changes. Hair can feel thinner and lifeless while in some cases it’s drier and coarser. When I look back at my toddler pictures, I see proof that at one time my hair was shiny, brilliant and alive. What the heck happened? Life happened but don’t despair too quickly. Rather than hurry to put something in your hair, look in your kitchen cupboards and get ready to change what you put in your mouth.
It sounds common sense to think “balance” when eating for a healthy all around lifestyle. This one key factor is in eating proper amounts of high-quality protein, fruits, vegetables and grains. Approximately 40-50% should be fruits and vegetables but this isn’t the only thing you need to ensure healthy hair. If you want to ensure your thinning hair isn’t a case of iron deficiency, include the richness of whole grain cereals, dried fruits, leafy veggies, eggs and even some red meat. These foods can reinforce hair follicles which create stronger hair and less hair breakage.
Hydrate: With all the shows and doctors that throw drinking water in our faces (pun intended) it’s enough to make you sick of hearing it. Drinking enough water puts us on the potty more often as it flushes toxins from our system. While we don’t have to drink 8 glasses a day for optimum hair health, it certainly is beneficial to have more than less and if you’re a coffee drinker remember that while it tastes yummy going down, coffee dehydrates your body and works against your trying to achieve healthy hair. Replace it with dandelion or exotic alfalfa tea and get back on track from the inside out to achieving healthy hair.
Omega-3 and Protein: Everyone tries to stay away from red meat these days, but it's not entirely bad for you in smaller portions. Poultry, one of the more popular protiens are regularly eaten but personally, fish is my preference as it also contains Omega-3fatty acids (GACK!! FAT!!!) Relax, it’s a good kind of fat which is essential to great health and especially beneficial to women. Flax seed is a fantastic source of protein and if you’re a vegetarian or not big on eating meat very often, popping some in your morning cereal is a great way to still meet your protein requirement.
Vitamin B: You probably hear moms voice in the background screaming ‘take your vitamins’ but if you’re anything like me, you’ll hate the pill popping routine. Vitamin B is especially important for super strong hair and Lord knows we need it the older we get. It can be found in everyday foods such as egg yolks, bread, salmon, avocados and berries. It’s actually quite prominent in grains so if you’re on a low carb diet, don’t neglect it altogether; simply replace it with a daily vitamin instead.
